So I’m trying my hand at drawing sketch cards. I’m not sure how well these will turn out, but they seem pretty easy to make and will give me practice on drawing protraits and tones.
By the way finding info for how to make them is really hard to find so I’ll put down what I find along the way.

Info
Size: 2.5 x 3.5 inch (6.4 x 8.9 cm)
Paper: Canson’s 220gsm paper (I’ve read that Bristol Board or water colour papaer is better - 250gsm - 300gsm stock)
I will be inking and colouring in later on in the week. Still modifying the one on the left (her neck bugs me)

I’ve been told by my teacher in art class that I need to concentrate on fore shortening and tone. In my life drawings I always seem to go for the darker tones instead of light. Way back in 2000 I was doing printmaking and remember the teacher telling me that when printing the lighter colours should go on first and the darker last. Now that I think about it makes sense that this would apply to normal drawings.

Anyhow I came across this pretty drawing of Rapunzel. I’ve heard of copic markers before but never really looked into it. Looks like fun and the same prinicpal seems to apply :)

It’s Odd

It’s odd that I find myself drawing more now than I did when I was at any type of school.

I hated high school, my art teacher made drawing seem like such a chore. She would demand we have 50 drawings of a horse by the next week of school. I hated art back then. Well didn’t hate it, I just didn’t like her teaching method.

Oddly enough I got into art school. I think it drove me insane for a while. I was already copying comic artist like Jim Lee, J.Scott Campbell and Sam Keith. I was also drawing a large amount of manga, think Salior Moon and Ranma 1/2.

A lecturer caught me and told me off. She said you MUST draw in your own style. I took that as she wanted me to give up. So I did and didn’t touch a pencil for another 5 years till I got to TAFE.

TAFE in Australia is considered the lowest form of teritary education but I found it the best type of education for me. Lecturers encouraged you to draw, and code at the same time. I began to experiment with illustrator and photoshop, before TAFE I never touched a computer. Now I draw almost everyday and I’m ready to show off what I do.

If I ever decide to have children I will encourage them to do what they want and never listen to people who want to discouraged them. I spent 10 years of my life being discouraged, only now I see how bad I was for listening.

Practising my life drawing skills. I hope one day to become a comic artist, sure I’m 30 but I can still dream right?
